This morning, I was working out at OrangeTheory® Fitness, and I noticed one of the motivational statements on the wall:
“One of the best feelings in the world is finishing a workout.”
It’s true, right? How many times do we say, “I hate going to the gym, but I LOVE the feeling after?”
I started to think about how much our feelings affect our performance and our productivity.
One of my clients, Lisa, recently said to me “I failed last week. I didn’t do my shutdown routine, and I suffered because of it.”
We conducted a deeper dive into this scenario. It was a crazy week, and the habits we have been building went out of the window in favor of the chaos at the moment. When I asked Lisa if the shutdown routine habit is otherwise beneficial, her response was an astounding “YES!” That she feels much more in control and is met with less surprises when she completes this simple routine we’ve built.
I wondered...how do we capture that feeling?
How do we replicate the feeling so that we are motivated to recreate the same feeling in the future? There are other things my clients do that generate a similar experience and they report back to me how valuable it was in the moment. One of the common goals my clients and I have is to help them to feel this way more often. Do you relate to some of these feelings?
That feeling you get when you finally sit down and start working on that big project that you have been putting off.
That feeling you get when you make a dreaded phone call (whether delivering bad news or just conducting business development).
That feeling you get when you say “no, not right now” to something that you just don’t have the time to commit to.
That feeling you get when you put down your cell phone and sit on the floor with your kids.
That feeling you get when you stop work and feel comfortable with what you are no longer working on for the day.
While I can't help people bottle up these feelings and recall "the feeling" at a time of need; I do help my clients feel the feels more often which leads to healthier habits. I love that I get to do that every day as part of my coaching.
