The Seemingly Insignificant Time Leaks

Updated: Oct 23

Throw away your clock.

Like many of you, this week marks a milestone event in my son's life: the end of elementary school.

On Monday, my husband and I attended his fifth-grade graduation. It was a sweet event honoring the kids' hard work in the first six plus years of school.  Yet, it was also an incredibly frustrating experience that I summarized below for you (for the longer story, see the LinkedIn post here.)

Since I value your time, I'll give you a very brief version of the LinkedIn post.  I was irritated with other parents not following directions or being respectful.  And while the time lost was insignificant in that situation (let's call it 10 minutes), it reminds us that there are seemingly small behaviors that result in excessive amounts of time.

Mel Robbins recently had Dr. Adam Alter on her podcast and his research has shown that the average smartphone user will leak twenty years of their lives by doom scrolling on their phones.

Twenty years.

I'll wait while that sinks in for you.

Periodically, I use the Firm Focus Weekly Time Tracker to evaluate where my time is spent.  I am not going to lie; it takes a lot of discipline to fill this thing out for a week.  You will fight the urge to do it.  But it is a very valuable exercise to bring Awareness and Change.

Filling out the Firm Focus Weekly Tracking sheet for a week will bring the awareness in the moment that you are about to engage in a behavior that is unhealthy, unnecessary, and leaking time.

It will also provide you with information for you to review and audit what you spend your time on and determine if it aligns with your goals, values, and priorities.  In other words, it will help you change and capture leaked time.

After you have had a chance to review how you’re spending your time, reach out to me for a complimentary and no pressure discovery call to discuss your time leaks.  The amazing coaches at Firm Focus feel passionate about helping busy and overwhelmed professionals, like you.
