Happy Halloween!

You’re likely working (like the rest of us), but hopefully you’re finding a moment for something fun—or maybe spending the day watching Netflix instead.

Speaking of Netflix, have you ever thought about how many hours of content are actually on there? I often wonder that as I’m sitting down to choose something to watch (this mind works in mysterious ways).

Now, imagine you decided right now that your goal was to watch everything on Netflix.  Every movie, show, documentary, and series. Each night, you binge three hours of content, determined to make progress. You’re watching a lot, yet somehow it still feels like you’re barely scratching the surface.

According to this outdated article from March 2020, Netflix contains over 2.2 million minutes of content (of course that count is undoubtedly higher at the time I am writing this). That means, assuming no additional content was added, if you continued at a pace of three hours per night, it would take you over thirty-three years to finish what is on Netflix. Thirty-three Years. (If Netflix is anything like Blockbuster, it might not even be around in thirty-three years).

Ok, so this example is sort of ridiculous, but it illustrates a point. I think we all know that we couldn’t possibly finish all of the content on Netflix. However, in my experience, many people approach projects the same way: just get started, grind away, stay consistent and you’ll get it done.

There are two critical errors in this approach:

Issue # 1 : Failure to Plan

Before diving into the work, you must step back and plan. Be the architect of your project and your workday. If you knew in advance it would take thirty-three years to finish 2.2 million minutes of Netflix, you’d at least understand the scope of the race you’ve entered.

Issue # 2 : Failure to Prioritize

Once you realize the full scope, in this case thirty-three years, then it’s time to decide what actually matters. Maybe you don’t want to watch everything on Netflix.  Maybe you instead decide to just watch the movies. Suddenly, the goal feels realistic and achievable.

(If you’re curious, it would take about seven years to finish all the movies on Netflix at three hours per night.)

When approaching any project, take time to plan and prioritize before you start. Otherwise, you might find yourself endlessly “binge-working” without ever feeling caught up. Clear priorities and a thoughtful plan ensure your energy is spent on what truly moves the needle.

Have an audacious project you are grinding away at and need help breaking it down? Let’s have a complimentary 30-minute chat and I’m happy to see where you may be stuck in planning it.

As far as Netflix goes, maybe just start with a more realistic goal of finishing one season by the end of the month! That’s only about an hour a day in most cases.
